I’m having a love affair. 😍

It’s probably not what you’re thinking...

Before I tell you about my love affair, let me share with you what I read this morning in Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, “Big Magic”…

“Why do people persist in creating, even when it’s difficult and inconvenient and often financially unrewarding?

"They persist because they are in love.

"They persist because they are hot for their vocation.”

Then she goes on to explain what she means by hot…

“You know how people who are having extramarital affairs always seem to manage to find time to see each other in order to have wild, transgressive sex?... Even if they get only fifteen minutes together in a stairwell, they will take that time and they will make out with each other like crazy.”

And then, this:

“Let yourself fall in love with your creativity like that and see what happens.

The Messy Phase of Metamorphosis

Since returning from Paris, I’ve been on quite an internal journey. Paris changed me, and upon returning to my usual world, I was not my usual self.

It took me a little while to recognize that I had set foot into what’s called the Neutral Zone*; that in-between terrain where the old way of life no longer exists and the new way has not yet formed.

It’s like the caterpillar in her cocoon, where she completely disintegrates into goo before transforming into a beautiful butterfly.

This in-between place is uncomfortable, messy and awkward. We are used to holding onto our identities, our definitions of ourselves, our usual ways of doing life. Who are we without all of these?

But we must let go of all those habits, beliefs, definitions, ways of being and doing, just like the caterpillar must dissolve everything that made her a caterpillar in order to become a butterfly.

However, in our desperate attempt not to die to the self we know, we wrestle, we flail about, we...

Questions For Going Beyond Overwhelm

A theme that often arises in my work with women is overwhelm...

They feel overwhelmed with all that they're juggling, or all the amazing creative ideas they have, and end up feeling daunted by everything rather than enlivened by it all.

They end up stopping or spinning their wheels, never getting traction or the satisfaction of bringing their book into the world or that passion project they know is their unique contribution to offer to the world.

In case you can relate to any of this, here are some questions to assist you in going beyond overwhelm so you can create - and ENJOY - more of what's really important to you.

Questions for Going Beyond Overwhelm

1. What's really important to you? Are you prioritizing that?
If not, acknowledge that (without judgment) and realize you can begin prioritizing what's really important to you starting right now. PRIORITIZATION supports you in getting out of overwhelm so that rather than feeling like EVERYTHING's gotta get...

Write Drunk. Edit Sober.

“Write drunk, edit sober,” is a famous quote (mis)attributed to Hemingway.

What does this actually mean? How can this wisdom contribute to you in your writing and creating?
Here’s how I see it…

WRITE DRUNK: especially in a first draft, let yourself off the leash, remove the filters, be willing to express yourself onto the page in a real, messy, surprise yourself kind of way.

When we’re drunk we tend to be uninhibited. We’re willing to choose things, say things, do things, be things, that we wouldn’t (necessarily) do if we weren’t under the influence.

What would it be like to WRITE from this uninhibited place?

I just read an article by a famous writer who talks about how this is an awful quote because it takes away from the work of the writer and feeds into the myths of the writing life as well as it condones addiction. I’m not condoning addiction, nor am I suggesting you...

The Power of Writing Prompts

Natalie Goldberg. Know her? Love her like I do?

I read her book, “Writing Down the Bones,” in my 20’s and it contributed so much to my writing. She provided writing prompts followed by the instructions: “Pen to page. No stopping. Go. Ten minutes.”

Every morning this month I’ve been enjoying re-reading a few pages from her book, “Old Friend from Far Away: The Practice of Writing Memoir,” and using her prompts to inspire and guide my writing.

What I love about writing prompts is that they serve as doorways into your depths… with pen to page and the editor in the backseat, your inner wisdom, hidden secrets, and other surprises are given a chance to pour forth onto the page and be revealed for what they are: gold.

Here’s a writing prompt from my morning reading: “List 30 ways you felt different from others as a child.”

>> Share below: what's 1 way you felt different from others as a child.

#konmari this...

I admit, I haven’t watched the Netflix series yet...

Nor have I read her #1 NY Times bestselling book...

But I’m definitely aware of the latest craze of “tidying up” with Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method™ of keeping only that which sparks joy in your home.

Kondo’s philosophy is similar to my “Live Your Yes” approach to life and business...

What lights you up, sparks joy and tickles your pleasure?

What inspires your heart to beat with a big ol’ YES?

When you keep choosing that and moving towards that and inviting that energy to be your compass and guide, magic unfolds.

But be aware: One of the biggest obstacles to having all the success and magic you know is possible doesn’t live in a cluttered pile in your closet; it lives inside of you.

What is it?

Self-doubt.

So whether or not you #konmari your home and office this month, #konmari any self-doubt that is holding you back from living,...

Choice: It's What's For Breakfast

You know what’s been turning me on a lot lately?

Making different choices. Letting go of old patterns. Embodying new energies. Adding things to my life.

Over the past month, I’ve...

  • Booked a trip to Paris in the spring of 2019 (I finally said no more waiting! Time to turn my dream of going into a reality!)
  • Started learning French (So far I’ve been learning through Duolingo yet today I have my first lesson with an actual tutor!)
  • Been published in an online journal three times (Combined, all the pieces have received over 13K views so far.)
  • Turned a moment of triggered mess into published success
  • Watched familiar family drama unfold and chose not to engage
  • Joined the gym (I even choose to work out on the stairmaster even though it’s my least fav cardio machine!)
  • Purchased some silky pajamas :)
  • Been participating in not just one, but two, online programs; one that’s devoted to the exploration of my sexuality and turn on and another that’s about...

My vegan Thanksgiving + failed pumpkin pie

In my late 20’s I decided to become a vegan. I’d already been a vegetarian for a few years so it wasn’t a huge stretch... for me.

But try visiting family for the Thanksgiving holiday when your dad and brother are hunters and pride themselves on having shot the bird that’s put on display for the big turkey dinner.

“What d’ya mean you’re not going to eat any turkey?”

“You’ll eat the mashed potatoes, right? There's just milk and butter in them. That doesn’t count.”

In a good-hearted attempt to share with them the joys of veganism, I made a pumpkin pie for dessert. Only it wasn’t just any kind of vegan pumpkin pie: it was a TOFU pumpkin pie. (I don’t know what I was thinking!)

... I followed a recipe.

... Made sure I was the only one in the kitchen while I made it. (I didn’t want them to know it was tofu until after they fell in love with it.)

... And then wondered why, even after an hour in...

All You Desire? It’s on the Other Side of this… (The “R” Word)

I’ve been discovering a ton about “resistance” lately, about its many different disguises and how it shows up right when I’m on the edge of another evolutionary leap.

Like last week it showed up as heaviness and grumpiness.

It’s also shown up as tightening my grip on the wheel, wanting to feel more in control as I feel more out of control with the changes I’m choosing.

And then (thank heavens for awareness)... I catch myself and SEE the RESISTANCE for what it is: the bouncers at the edge of my comfort zone.

“You sure you want to go beyond this familiar territory? We don’t think you want to do that. No. We’re going to remind you of how scary it is out there, in the unknown. It’s way better to stay in here where we can be in charge, and keep you tame and limited.”

Living with resistance is like driving with one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake. YOU NEVER GET WHERE YOU DESIRE TO GO!...
