The Biggest Copywriting Mistakes (Part 2)

Mistakes… we all make them.

(And YAY! They’re proof that you are trying!)

Yet they’re especially dangerous when you don’t even know you’re making them, because you’re repelling clients and wondering, “Why isn’t anyone signing up for this?”

These copywriting mistakes can be painful and costly. So keep reading, and learn what not to do, and what to do instead, to make your message magnetic…

Mistake #5: Writing Generic Copy

This kind of copy sounds salesy. And it’s sterile, making you blend in with all the other entrepreneurs who do what you do. Yikes!

So what do you do instead?

UNLEASH!

You need to bring your authentic voice to your message. This is your “special sauce”!

Let your people know what turns you on, what pisses you off, what’s important to you. This helps people feel you, which makes “salesy” language dissolve into warm fuzzies…

Sharing more of yourself in your copy (and knowing how to do this effectively) helps you create chemistry with your ideal clients.

Chemistry supports the, “know, like and trust” factor. If you can help someone get what they want, and they know, like and trust you, they’re more likely to say YES to working with you.

Your special sauce also helps you stand out from the crowd. So you’ll “pop” out to your ideal clients… like a cherry in a bowl of rice.

Mistake #6: Not Reviewing Your Copy

Mistakes in your copy = messy copy. Things like missing punctuation, misspellings, and other typos make you look unprofessional.

(These mistakes are one of my pet peeves! And I know I’m not the only one that gets distracted and annoyed by them.)

Here’s a very simple solution: make sure you have someone review and edit your copy before you send or launch it.

This includes (especially for a sales page) following through the entire sign-up and registration steps so you ensure all parts are working as they need to (links, payment buttons, etc.).

This isn’t exactly a mistake that shows up in your copy, yet making this mistake causes a lot of frustration…

Mistake #7: Expecting Your Copy to be Perfect from the Get-Go

One of my clients said that sitting down to write was like a bad case of constipation! She got so uptight, nothing would come out…

Expecting perfection with your first draft is like expecting to go out and compete in a marathon without warming up or ever having run around the block. Give yourself a break.

As Anne Lamott (author of Bird by Bird) says,

“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft.”

So start with BRAINSTORMING! Just get it all out. Create your “shitty first draft” and then go back in and review and refine.
